Boadua (E/R), Jan. 21, GNA - The people of Boadua, near Akwatia, on Friday had their indebtedness towards their town's water project paid for them by President J. A. Kufuor.
The Kwaebibirem District Chief Executive, Mar Yaw Yiadom-Boakye presented a cheque for 168,260 million cedis to Barima Owusu Konadu, II, Boaduahene in fulfilment of a promise made by the President during a visit to the town in late 2004 to pay off the balance of the town's 285 million-cedi contribution towards the 5.7 billion-cedi water project. The District assembly also paid 285 million-cedi contribution towards the 5.7 billion-cedi water project.
The District assembly also paid 285 million cedis being five per cent of the cost of the project to give Boadua with a population of over 12,000 potable water to save them from water-borne diseases which resulted from the use of water from unsafe sources, principally from the polluted Mmo river.
Mr Yiadom-Boakye described the Boadua small-town water project which the German development agency KFW/GTZ bore 90 per cent of the cost of construction as the largest of its type in the Eastern Region. The DCE said during the President's tour of parts of the district in 2004, he was made aware of the deplorable nature of roads in the district and he promised to do something about them.
True to his promise, work of the sub New Abirem, Boadua-Akwatia, Kade-Akyem-Wenchi-Oda roads were being reconstructed.
He said Asuom township roads would be tackled for which Ghana Highways Authority was getting plans ready and that the promised up-grading of Asuom Secondary School would soon take off. The Boaduahene, Barimah Owusu Konadu on behalf of himself, elders and the people of Boadua thanked the president for fulfilling his promise which had brought big relief to the community.
He noted that though the water project had been completed and in use, the town's indebtedness was outstanding and the payment by the President would receive the eternal gratitude of his people. The Krontihene and Chairman of the Water Committee, Bafour Frempong Kaja, the second, expressed appreciation of the town to the Member of Parliament for the Akwatia Constituency, Mr K. A. Kissi for helping the people with 70 million cedis from his share of the MPs common fund. In related development, the DCE inspected the 2.4 kilometer Boadua - Akwatia road being reconstructed with HIPC funds. He also inspected the 10-kilometre Subi Abompe road, none-kilometer of which has been tarred and also the first phase of the Kade - Akyem Wenchi - Oda road.
The first phase involves the construction of the road to Kusi. Mr Yiadom-Boakye urged the contractors to speed up work on the roads and expressed the district deepest appreciation to the President for coming to its rescue.
