President Kufuor inaugurates Garu-Tempane District

Garu (U/E), Oct. 26, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Monday inaugurated the newly created Garu-Tempane District at a durbar organised by the Chiefs and people of the Garu-Tempane Traditional Area. He said the new status, as an autonomous District would mean the provision of infrastructure, electricity, schools, hospitals and roads by the Government.

President Kufuor announced that 16 billion cedis had been provided for the upgrading of the Tempane Senior Secondary School, and that the Government as a matter of commitment would construct a District Hospital in the area.

He appealed to the rank and file of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the area to co-operate with Mr Joseph Akudibilla, incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) and the Party's Parliamentary Candidate for Election 2004.

President Kufuor explained that, even though, Mr Akudibilla entered Parliament as an independent MP, he proved himself to be a good material and caught the eye of the Government, hence his appointment to the office of Deputy Defence Minister.

He apologised to the people of Garu-Tempane for the rough treatment some of them were subjected to by Police personnel in the wake of the controversy that cropped up during Mr Akudibilla's confirmation as NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the area, and urged them to return the MP to Parliament in the forthcoming election.

Earlier in a welcoming address, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, Paramount Chief of the Bawku Traditional Area, thanked the Government on his people's behalf for the development projects brought to the Bawku area during the past four years.

He also expressed his appreciation to the Government for appointing a son of the area, Mr Akudibilla, as Deputy Defence Minister, and noted that it was the first time that someone from the area had been give a ministerial appointment.

He called on his people to conduct themselves peacefully during the forthcoming elections.
