President John Mahama, on Thursday directed that a borehole should be drilled for the Our Lady of Lourdes Senior High School in Navrongo in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region.

He gave the directive when he visited the school as part of his two-day working visit to the region to inspect some ongoing projects, completed ones and to inaugurate others.

Students of the school walk long distances to fetch water for use because there is no source of water on campus.

The school authorities also spend huge sums of money every week to get water.

President Mahama said although Ghana had achieved the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education in advance by about 90 per cent as part of the Millennium Development Goal that targets education, government is however aware that there are still some children who are not in school.

He acknowledged the increased number of junior high school graduates who were unable to access senior high schools (SHS) due to inadequate facilities.

President Mahama said government is building more community based schools to mop up the remaining junior high school graduates and also continue to improve on existing structures.

On schools charging unapproved fees, the President indicated that plans are in place in consultation with Ministry of Education and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Schools to rationalise SHS fees.

He urged the students to use their formative years to study hard and excel in their various study areas.

Earlier, the president presented 2,200 laptops to 48 senior high, vocational and technical schools out of which 13 of the schools were private institutions at a special ceremony at the Bolgatanga Girls Senior high.

Alhaji Limuna Mohammed-Muniru, Regional Minister, charged the Regional Director of Education to ensure that the schools derive maximum benefits from the computers so that the goal of the Better Ghana Agenda would be achieved.
