Private SSSCE starts amid initial confusion

Sunyani (B/A) Oct. 6, GNA - Some registration centres in Sunyani Municipality for this year's private candidates' Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations, which got started on Thursday, faced a number of problems.

During a tour by Ghana News Agency to some of the centres, some of the candidates were found to be in a confused state as they moved up and

down because they had not as yet received their admission letters. Some were seen holding their receipts or other relevant documents given them by the Brong Ahafo Regional Office of West African Examinations Council during the nation-wide registration exercise. At the Twene Amanfo Secondary/Technical School centre, however, two candidates, Master Edmund Oppong and Miss Christiana Aba Benewaa, said they had received their photo-embossed admission letters but left them at home.

Following unsatisfactory answers to questions from the invigilating team led by Mr. Costers Nketiah, who is Assistant Headmaster of the school, the two candidates were made to rush home for the letters.

This happened at the time that their colleagues were busily writing a paper.

The two candidates who said they resided at New Dormaa, about five kilometres away from the school were part of the 165 candidates who constituted the second batch of the total of 565 candidates billed for the Oral English paper at the centre.

Miss Loretta Adwubi Loretta of Duayaw-Nkwanta had her admission letter with the school as her centre but had the misfortunate of her name missing in the centre's master sheet or register. The quick intervention of Mr. Nketiah and a WAEC official however, saved her the ordeal and was allowed to write the paper.

Later in an interview Mr. Nketiah said six, out of the 270 candidates who formed the first batch of candidates for the Oral English paper, were absent.

Four candidates of the second batch of 265 candidates also missed out.

Similar problems were recorded at other centres. The candidates' admission form letters stated that centres in the Municipality for the examinations included Sunyani Polytechnic, Christ the King Cathedral, Sunyani Secondary School, St. Mary's Junior Secondary School, St. James Seminary/Secondary School, College of Renewable Natural Resources, Solomon Bennett Memorial JSS and WAEC.
