Probe poor roads construction at Ashaiman - Regent of Ashaiman

The Regent of Ashaiman, Nii Annan Adzor I has called for investigations into all road contracts that have been awarded by the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (ASHMA) due to shoddy construction of roads in the area.

Nii Annan Adzor I questioned the competence of contractors who have been awarded contracts to execute road projects in the municipality, adding that such contractors must be made to answer questions over the poor construction of roads.

Some roads have started developing potholes barely a month after completion of works and this prompted the regent to make the statement.

Some of the poorly constructed roads that have developed potholes include Ashaiman Newtown-Africa Road, Lebene Junction to Newtown Junction Road, Ashilita Road at Jericho, the road from Ashaiman Senior High School (SHS) to Middle East.

Nii Adzor I, who made the disclosure in an interview with DAILY GUIDE over the poor construction of roads in his traditional area, said that “sometimes contractors come to the road to do networks and you ask yourself whether they have done any extensive studies on the required weight for that particular road.

“When you want to talk about proper road construction, you need to consider the nature of the work and the compartments must also go down well. You must consider all the trucks that will use the road and the fiction, the bitumen used in Ashaiman is very light.”

He wondered whether the Department of Urban Roads and the Assembly have inspection teams which inspect roads after the completion of projects.

“Sometimes I cry within my soul when they waste money to build roads and in the next two three weeks they go bad. It’s a problem, what kind of development are we talking about in Ashaiman and Ghana?” he quizzed.

“In order to save money, you need to do good things but coming back to the same place to work is not proper development,” he stated.

According to him, he might mobilize some members of the traditional council and the media to storm the assembly to demand effective execution of road projects in the municipality.

Recently, the Presiding Member of ASHMA, Braimah B. Abadulai, also raised similar concerns and questioned the expertise of contractors working on roads in the area.

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ashaiman, Ibrahim Baidoo, was of the view that the deterioration of the roads was as a result of the initial application of the bitumen on most roads.

Some residents claimed the type of bitumen used in the construction of roads in the municipality was substandard.
