Accra, May 16, GNA - The Chiefs and People of Adaklu on Monday called on President John Agyekum Kufuor to set up a neutral and independent body to probe the siting of the capital of the newly created Adaklu-Anyigbe District.
A statement in Accra signed by Mr Edwin Billy Komla, a Citizen of the Town, on behalf of the Chiefs and People, urged Parliament to interpret a memo sent to the Immediate Past Speaker Mr Peter Ala Adjetey on the Legislative Instrument (LI) 1807 which recommended that Adaklu Waya be maintained as the capital of the District.
The statement said the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, in addition to other committees set up to investigate the issue had recommended that the capital should be maintained at Adaklu Waya, however, Mr Kofi Dzamesi, Volta Regional Minister, was pushing for funds to construct a new assembly block at Kpetoe.
"We, therefore, doubt Mr Dzamesi's neutrality in setting up a committee, which can unearth the truth".
The statement said Mr Dzamesi had once written to the people of Adaklu that he could not do anything about the capital and had never tried to look at the recommendations that had been made. The Chiefs and People stated that the appointment of a District Chief Executive from Adaklu was not a guarantee that they would leave the issue and become part of the District.
The people insisted that their request should be met on the basis of the Report of the Electoral Commission; the LI 1741 of 2004; recommendations of the Asogli Traditional Council of Ho, the Volta Regional House of Chiefs and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs. 16 May 05
