Accra, Feb. 18, GNA- Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris, Minister of Works and Housing on Wednesday said work on the laying of new pipelines from the Weija Headworks to Amasaman in the Ga District, which began in 2002 would be completed by the end of November 2004.

He said the project was the outcome of an agreement between the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and Ballast Nedam Ghana B.V., adding that the scope of work under the project involved the laying of transmission line from Sowutuom to Ofankor to Amasaman and the reinforcement of concrete reservoir capacity at Asofaa and a booster station at Sowutuom, all in the Greater Accra region.

The Minister, who was answering a question in Parliament said beyond this project, the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) would also undertake the design for the distribution of water within the Amasaman community, which would begin in the second quarter of 2005 and also undertake the civil work in the third quarter of 2005 and the project completed by the end of 2005.

Mr. Ernest Armah, NDC-Ga South had sought to know from the Minister efforts being made to provide the Amasaman town with pipe-borne water. Alhaji Idris said the distribution of water in the Amasaman community was being financed under the DANIDA funded water supply and sanitation project Phase two, and it would benefit Greater Accra, Eastern, Central and the Volta Regions.

In answer to a question from Mr. Akwasi Dante-Afriyie, NPP-Atwima Mponua, as to when the Community Water and Sanitation (CWSP) project in the Atwima District would begin, the Minister said the project began in 2002 and funded by a German company, Kreditstantalt fur Wiederaufbau. Alhaji Idris said, as part of the project, many communities in the district have signed their facilities management plans and have paid their contribution of five per cent towards the capital cost of facilities.

" The head office of the CWSA is in the process of awarding the drilling contract... by the first week in April 2004. Pumps for the boreholes have already been procured. Drilling of boreholes will start by September ending 2004, for completion by the end of December, 2004."

Mr. George Amponsah, NPP- Asunafo South wanted to find out from the Minister plans for providing good drinking water for the people of Kukuom, Kwapong and Sankore in the Asunafo District.

Alhaji Idris said CWSA in conjunction with the district has packaged Kukuom and Sankore for construction works under the small towns water and sanitation project being financed by the government and the International Development Association (IDA) through the Community Water and Sanitation Project.
