Properties worth GHC330, 500 were destroyed by fire in Brong-Ahafo Region in 2012, Mr Kwame Adomako, the Acting Brong-Ahafo Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has said.

He told the GNA in an in interview that the Region recorded 572 fire outbreaks during the period and that out of the figure, 130 were bushfires were recorded compared to 53 in 2011.

He said 237 were domestic fires, 74 were fires on vehicles, electrical faults 28, industrial fires 18, commercial fires 15, seven institutional fires and other fire outbreaks 26.

Mr Adomako advised the general public to weed their surroundings to avoid bushfires spreading to their properties, while broken bottles should be removed to prevent them from attracting fire from the sun with the severity of the harmattan.

He urged the public to report fire outbreaks promptly to the GNFS through their free Vodafone emergency line to prevent fire outbreaks spreading to nearby houses and farms.

“The general public should refrain from reporting or making false alarm on fire outbreaks since that could delay emergency calls that required prompt attention.”

Mr Adomako observed that the emergence of illegal structures in the Region was a major challenge to their operations.
