Ho, March 21, GNA - The proposed Local Government Service has been designed to be highly professional and offer career opportunities and development.

Mr Woeli Kemevor, Director, Office of Head of Civil Service (OHCS) who announced this at a sensitisation workshop for Heads of Decentralised Departments in the Volta Region said "I do not see why people should not be happy with the Service".

It was organised by the proposed Local Government Service Secretariat in collaboration with the Public Service Reforms, Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council and Head of Civil Service (OHCS). The workshop was to discuss the organisational structure, scheme and conditions of service with Heads of Departments to identify gaps and correct them.

Mr Kemevor said the proposed Service would create opportunities for promotions, since about 170 District Directors of the Service would be needed.

He said all employees in that Service would undergo a prescribed level of training and as a matter of policy each employee would have a minimum 40 hours of in-service training to perform better. Mr Kemevor said the Institute of Local Government Service (ILGS) had been mandated to develop training modules for staff of the proposed Service.

He said new conditions of Service had also been designed for the staff and husbands would be entitled to paternity leave to support their wives after delivery. However, Mr Kemevor said the challenge in the new service was for the staff to perform as premium would be on their attitude to work.
