Public school teachers urged to show more dedication

Accra, Oct. 11, GNA - Teachers in public schools have been urged to do all they can to raise their students' level of performance to match up to that of students in private schools.

This is because not all parents have the means to send their children to private schools.

Ms Lydia Osei, Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), who was speaking at the Ghana National Association of Teachers' (GNAT) awards night in Accra, observed that at the basic level, students from privately owned schools often found it easier to enter well-endowed second cycle institutions. She said it was how ever interesting to note that most teachers in these private schools were not trained teachers, adding that with trained teachers largely being employed by public schools, the situation was inexcusable.

The Deputy Director-General reminded teachers that it was of credit to their own name and honour if they took the necessary pains to ensure that their students became well-accomplished citizens in the future. She urged all teachers to do their best to ensure the full development of the children that fell within their care. Mrs Irene Duncan-Adanusa, General Secretary of GNAT, urged the Government and all stakeholders within the education sector to invest into the training of teachers.

She said this was most needed since quality education required well-trained teachers.

In all 20 members of GNAT made up of 10 men and 10 women from all the 10 regions of the country were awarded with 12-inch colour television sets for the men and four- burner gas cookers for the women and certificates.

The awards and certificates were for their various contributions towards the growth of GNAT.

NODECO International Ghana Ltd also donated two Jialing Model JH 70 motorcycles worth 18 million cedis to GNAT. Mr Nick Osae Djin, Managing Director of NODECO, said his company was ready to cooperate with GNAT through banks to provide their members with motorbikes on hire purchase bases especially to ease problems teachers in the rural areas faced with transportation.
