Pupils of Kaira portray value of education reforms

Kaira (V/R), March 25, GNA - The new educational reforms programme promises to bring out latent talents of children in basic schools, especially those in the rural areas as demonstrated by pupils of Kaira Basic School in the South Dayi District.

Pupils of the school held their parents and invited guests spell-bound with fluent English and exquisite performances in poetry recitals, drama, traditional dances and choreography during their first ever speech and prize giving day recently.

"No one will believe if told that these kids are from Kaira Basic School. They can compete with any other basic school in the country, let us assist and support them, then in the next 10 to 15 years Kaira can boast of ministers of state, lawyers, doctors, engineers and other professionals", said Dr. Kwame Ampofo, Member of Parliament for South-Dayi.

The school with a population of 209 pupils was established in 1964 following the resettlement of the community as a result of the construction of the Akosombo Dam.

Promise Asiedu, a class one pupil of the school, confidently recited the national pledge making Dr. Ampofo to remark, that "even some ministers of state and parliamentarians falter when reciting the national pledge".

Dr Ampofo said the school's drama group could easily pass for a professional drama troupe with their thought-provoking sketch on the importance of education.

He appealed to parents in the community to invest their time and resources in the education of their children as the only legacy they could bequeath to them because, "Education is like a master key that can open all locked doors".

Dr. Ampofo said he had set aside 20,000 Ghana Cedis of his share of the MP Common Fund to establish a Senior High School in the Kpalime Traditional Area and appealed to students in the area to take studies seriously.
