Thirty-two schools in the Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo District have had their roofs ripped off by rainstorm and this is affecting academic work.
Schools close when rain clouds form and classes are called off at 1230 hours at the DA Junior High School because of the blazing sun.
When the GNA visited some of the schools, pupils were seen sitting in classrooms that had pools of water on the floor.
Mr. Duut Saaganma Gado, Headmaster of the DA JHS, told journalists on Tuesday that the roofs were ripped off in April and attempts to get the Ghana Education Service, the District Assembly and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to rehabilitate the structures had not succeeded.
He said the school had written to these institutions on several occasions but no support was coming, leaving the students at the mercy of the weather.
Mr. Gado said when the Parent/Teacher Association was contacted, they also complained of financial constraints due to bad harvest and high cost of living and were therefore not in a position to support the re-roofing of the classrooms.
Mr. Justine Bayela Dakorah, District Director of Education for the Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo, confirm that the 32 schools that had their roofs ripped off were doted across the district.
He said the GES contacted the District Assembly about the calamity but it complained of financial difficulties since much of its budget had been used on conflict management.
He expressed the hope that very soon efforts would be made to re-roof the schools to ensure the pupils enjoyed their academic activities in a conducive atmosphere.
Biisub Biidi, the Girls’ Prefect of the DA JHS, complained that the calamity had brought hardships in their academic work because their classrooms got flooded when it rains and appealed to the government to come to their aid.
Bumbom Namka, the Boys’ School Prefect, said learning becomes difficult and uncomfortable in such circumstances and appealed to philanthropists and non-governmental organizations to re-roof the school to put academic activities back on track.
When the GNA contacted the District Chief Executive for the Bunkpurugu/Yunyoo, Mr. Philip Laari, he said re-roofing of the structures would start next Tuesday and called for patience.
