Yendi (N/R), March 7, GNA - Alhaji Mohammed Habib Tijani, the Yendi District Chief Executive, has appealed to the government to raise the status of the district to a municipality.

He said the district, which is made up of two political constituencies, one urban council and five area councils, was too large in size and population for its effective administration. Alhaji Tijani said this at a parade of school children and voluntary organisations in Yendi on Tuesday to mark Ghana's 50th independence anniversary.

He said the assembly was liasing with the relevant authorities and institutions for the establishment of a teacher training college and a nursing training college in the district. He said a strong case had also been made for the completion of a permanent police divisional headquarters, a barracks and the establishment of a police depot to train more personnel to maintain peace in the district.

Alhaji Tijani said in spite of the challenges in the security sector, some progress was made in education, health, water and sanitation and administration.

In the education sector, 62 projects were executed through either construction or rehabilitation in the basic, second cycle and tertiary institutions.

In the health sector 25 projects were executed through improvements in the hospitals, health centres and clinics. On water and sanitation, he said 79 projects were executed which included the provision of water points, toilets, abattoirs and a meat van.

In the administrative sector 47 projects were executed through the construction of guesthouses, office and residential accommodation for staff of the District administration.

Alhaji Tijani said a total of 1,106 youth in the district had been employed under the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP). He said under the Youth in Agri-Business 750 people were employed, in the Youth in Sanitation 26 people were supported and under the Youth in Employment as teaching assistants 212 youth were engaged. Under the Youth in Environmental Health 20 people were supported, under the Youth in Auxiliary Nursing 80 were selected while 18 people had marked for posting to departments and institutions. 07 March 07
