A yet-to-be released research by NGO Action Aid Ghana has found many teenage girls living in the rural peripheries of the capital, Accra are being abused and harassed sexually on daily bases in schools.

The NGO says places like Amasaman and Abokobi, which were the focus of the two-month research showed between 12 and 15 girls out of 200 were sexually abused in their schools.

The development is reportedly preventing some girls from going to school.

Deputy country director of Action Aid, Yakubu Mohammed Saani disclosed the statistics to XYZ News and blames irresponsible parenting for the festering problem.

He told XYZ News’ Isaac Kaledzi that stakeholders must collaborate to deal with the situation.

“This is quite disheartening. A study we conducted two months ago reveals that a lot of children actually go through sexual violence,” he said.

He said the culprits lure the young girls into their rooms to have sexual intercourse with these naïve children.

According to him, the study also found that the level of sexual promiscuity is very high among these young ladies within the communities where the study was conducted.

Aside poverty, Mr. Yakubu Mohammed Saani blamed the situation on child neglect where parents shirk their responsibilities of parenting and force their children to fend for themselves.
