Eighty-four (84) year-old former Editor of the Ghanaian Times and Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Kwame Gyawu-Kyem, has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to re-introduce civic education in schools.
He said this is necessary to inculcate in the youth the right attitudes and values to inject pace into the nation’s socio-economic and political development.
He was addressing school children at a “Citizenship Day” celebration organised at Nyinahin in the Atwima-Mponua District by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).
Mr Gyawu-Kyem said, more is needed to help infuse in the young people, the nation’s future leaders, the spirit of patriotism. He advised the youth to be disciplined, show respect to the elderly and those in authority.
It is also important that they do everything to protect the property of the state and expose those who engage in corrupt practices.
Mr Gyawu-Kyem said “we could not build a society where people show little or no regard for the law.”
He spoke of the need for the elderly to become good examples to the young ones by conforming to acceptable social behaviours.
The former Editor and MP used the occasion to appeal to workers to do away with industrial unrest and make sure that they use the right channels to get their grievances addressed.
Mr Agyemang Gyasi, the District NCCE Director, said the Commission has embarked on the establishment of civic education clubs in both Junior and Senior High Schools in the area.
This would help deepen their understanding of the Constitution.**
