Read and write project launched in Berekum

Nana Afia Siraa-Ababio III, the queen of Kato in the Berekum Municipality, has appealed to parents to encourage their children to develop the habit of reading and writing.

She made the call on Tuesday during the launch of a read and write project initiated by the Environment of Hope (EoHope) Foundation and Asuama Kyere Community Mobile Library Project (AKCOMLIP), a local non-governmental organisation, at a ceremony at Tewobaabi in the Berekum Municipality.

The project, sponsored by the US Embassy in Ghana Mobile Library, aims at covering about 2000 pupils in three communities in the Municipality to improve their reading and writing capabilities.

The other two beneficially communities are Adom and Abisiase.

Nana Afia Siraa-Ababio, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, said the project became possible after a stakeholders’ meeting in January by special a committee comprising the Berekum Traditional Council, the Municipal Assembly and the Municipal Education Directorate.

She said the programme would be carried out through liaising with the Ghana Education Service (GES) for technical advice within the confines of the rules and regulations of the Service.

Nana Afia Siraa-Ababio said apart from the 1,500 books bought at the cost of GH¢ 4000.00 to support the project, the Ghana library Authority (GLA) which is the main collaborator would also supply the books to the children through Coordinators and volunteers selected by the beneficiary communities trained by the GLA.

She said the Coordinators would provide volunteers with the books on weekly basis who in turn would supply at the door steps of the children for selection of their choice of books to read within a week.

Nana Afia Siraa-Ababio said the Project would be supervised by the Foundation and the GLA to ensure its effective management and success and appealed to teachers and parents of beneficiary communities to support the project.

She urged the pupils to make good use of the opportunity to become responsible citizens and good future leaders of the country.

Nana Afia Siraa-Ababio appealed to all stakeholders and philanthropists to assist the Foundation financially to extend such a laudable Project to all remote communities in the Brong-Ahafo Region.

Nana Fosuaa Boateng, Berekum Municipal Deputy Director of Education, commended the Foundation for such great idea to improve the pupils' potentials.

She appealed to parents to desist from pushing their children into early marriages and rather assist in promoting their education, especially the girls.
