The Regent of Dagbon, Kpapankuya Naa Yakubu Abdulai Andani, has commended the government for responding quickly to assist with relief items 1,620 displaced people of Yendi Municipality whose 503 houses including seven schools were destroyed by rain storm on February 28.
The items included 300 packets of roofing sheets, five packets of roofing nails, 50 bags of 25kg bags of rice, 500 cartons of plastic plates, 20 cartons of cooking oil, 200 blankets and 20 cartons of washing soap.
Kapankuya Naa Abdulai Yakubu Andani made the commendation when the Regional NADMO Coordinator, Alhaji Mahama Abdulai Silimboma, the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Issah Zakaria, the Yendi Municipal Coordinating Director Mr. Sarfo Kantanka Agyepong and a team from NADMO and Ghana Education Service paid a courtesy call on him at his palace to find out about the re-roofing of the rooms at the palace.
He expressed his appreciation to NADMO for presenting 20 packets of roofing sheets and five packets of roofing nails to the Naa Gbewa palace to re-roof the rooms whose roofs the rainstorm ripped off.
The Regent appealed to NADMO to step up education of the people in planting trees to serve as wind breaks and not to leave tree planting to the Forestry Commission alone, adding that rainstorm disasters are now rampant and the government cannot get funds to continue to rehabilitate houses that rainstorms might destroy.
The Regional NADMO Coordinator Alhaji Silimboma stated that, during their rounds he presented roofing sheets to the seven affected schools for the Yendi Municipal Assembly to help the schools to re-roof their classrooms.
He said the seven schools benefiting from the relief items include Nurul Islam Primary School, Sunson JHS, Zohe JHS, Reheman International Primary School, Wanbung Primary and Islamic No 1 JHS among others.
He advised the people to ensure that they use quality building materials in roofing their houses to avoid rainstorm disaster.
The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Issah Zakaria, assured the NADMO personnel that the Yendi Municipal Assembly will re-roof all the seven affected schools in the municipality to enable teaching and learning to continue.
Mr. Zakaria appealed to benevolent organizations and their developing partners to assist the displaced people.
Alhaji Mahama Shamrock who received the relief items on behalf of the Municipal Director of Education thanked NADMO and the government for the relief items presented to the seven schools.
He appealed to other benevolent societies to assist the schools with more roofing materials.
