The Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Na Yakubu Abdulai Andani, on Wednesday inspected some on-going projects in the Yendi Municipality to be abreast with progress of work.
The projects he inspected included the Joint Venture Eastern Corridor Road Camp site, the on-going construction of the Roman Catholic Teacher Training College, the Yendi Municipal Assembly, the 60 stores Multi Purpose Commercial Centre funded from the Urban Development Grant (UDG), the Yendi Municipal Hospital burnt laundry, a new Pharmacy Block constructed by the Assembly, and the Children’s ward.
Na Yakubu Abdulai Andani urged contractors of the Joint Venture Eastern Corridor Road, to employ both skilled and unskilled local workers from the area as means of helping to address poverty.
He advised them to buy local foodstuff produced in the area, such as rice, maize and yam, to feed the workers, instead of over-reliance on foreign foodstuff to the neglect of the locally produced food.
He explained that patronizing the locally produced food, the farmers would benefit from their produce, while poverty would be reduced to the barest minimum.
He urged chiefs along the Eastern Corridor road, to support the contractors, and play the watchdog role to ensure that materials were not diverted.
He advised all communities not to buy stolen materials from the workers.
Mr Daniel Sakitey, Administrator of the Joint Venture Eastern Corridor Road, said about 40 per cent of the work on the road had been done.
He said about 500 workers had so far been engaged to work on the 210-kilometre road, and that 2,000 workers are targeted to be employed, and expressed the hope that construction would be completed in 2016.
The Kampakuya Na expressed satisfaction at the progress of work at all the places he visited, and commended the workers for executing excellent work.
Mr Issah Zakaria, Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, who accompanied the chiefs said because the area had been peaceful, that is why it was seeing development projects springing up in every part of the Municipality.
He urged them to maintain the peace for more development.
