Somanya (E/R), Oct. 7, GNA- The Eastern Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mr. Solomon Djaba-Mensah has observed that the CAP 30 Pension Scheme, could be sustainable if workers were asked to contribute towards it.

He said pension schemes in the public sector should also be related to occupational hazards.

Mr. Djaba-Mensah was speaking at Somanya in the Eastern Region, during the observance of the 2004 World Teachers Day, which was on the theme: "Pension Without Tension, Prospects and Challenges of the Presidential Commission on Pensions".

He suggested the need for a new management for public sector pension schemes instead of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust. He explained that such an arrangement would ensure better conditions for contributors.

The Deputy Regional Secretary of GNAT, Mr. Richard Equity Komla Sagodo called on members of the Presidential Commission, to come out with a scheme that would make the retirement period of workers realistic.

He said retirement should be an "actual resting period and not the period of poverty, hunger, disease and death".

The Akuapem North District Secretary of GNAT, Mr. Collins S. Tegah said pensions and gratuities were "matters of life and death" and warned, "The debates and agitations would continue until an appreciable scheme is put in place.
