Residents of Mudor Electoral Area in the Odododiodoo Constituency at the weekend turned up in their numbers to participate in a cleanup exercise in the community.

It was organised by a youth leader and an aspiring assemblyman for the area, Nii Komme Mettle Otoo.

They desilted choked drains, swept and cleared weeds around the roadside and white washed the curbs.

Public places of convenience were also washed and disinfected.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency during the exercise, Nii Komme said the cleanup, the second in a series planned monthly, was to ensure a clean environment for this year’s Homowo festival of the Ga Traditional Area.

He expressed the need for a clean environment to ensure good health for the people and said “cleanliness is next to Godliness”.

Nii Komme said the people must support the government and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to keep the city of Accra clean to befit its status as the nation’s capital and the gateway to the country.

A broken and blocked underground sewage was repaired and diverted to allow for the free flow of water at Adendenkpo Junction during the first exercise, he said and commended the people for their active participation.

Nii Komme also praised the Zoom Alliance Waste Management Contractors and the AMA for providing equipment for the exercise.

Mr Joseph Otoo, Accra Metropolitan National Disaster Management Organisation Coordinator, called for a planned programme to dredge the Odaw River and the Korle Lagoon, which he described as the receptacle for storm water during the rainy season.

This he said would avoid flooding in the city, which usually claim lives and property.

The National Democratic Congress Constituency Chairman, Mr Daniel Nii Okai who took part in the exercise commended Nii Komme for his initiative and said such public spirited people are the ones who should be entrusted with public office.
