Residents of Kansaworado, a farming community in the Essikado Ketan constituency of the Western Region, are calling on the Ghana Police Service to provide security for their goats and other livestock.

Though rearing of goats is not the mainstay of the people, most of the residents are engaged in livestock as supplement.

According to the residents, their livestock have in recent times been on the radar of thieves who have been stealing them, especially at night.

They told Takoradi-based Connect FM that efforts to ensure that the rampant stealing of their goats stops have proved futile as the elders of the community have failed to help them end the crime.

Some of the affected residents claimed several complaints to the elders of the community are yet to yield any positive response.

The livestock stealing menace has compelled some of the victims to invoke curses on anyone who will from now onwards steal any animal in the community.

One resident recounts that a young man who was caught in the act defiantly insisted that the goat he was holding was rather a deer he caught during his hunting expedition.

“I was in a room when I heard a neighbour confronting a young man who was holding a pregnant goat had stolen and was trying to bolt with it, but for the timely intervention of a passerby he was arrested,” the resident said.

They have vowed anyone caught from now on would be dealt with to serve as deterrent to other potential thieves.

The residents say their only hope in ending the stealing of their livestock will be for the police to protect the animals.
