Winneba (C/R), Jan. 5, GNA - The youth should resist the ambitions of selfish politicians during the forthcoming general elections, Mr Mike Allen Hammah, MP for Efutu, has advised.
He reminded the youth that in most cases those who gave them alcoholic drinks to misbehave during electioneering campaigns and at polling stations on election days left them to their fate when they fell sick because of their over indulgence.
Mr Hammah, who was speaking at the inauguration of the Winneba Low-Cost Progressive Youth Club (PYC), a non-political organisation at Winneba, on Saturday, said it was unfortunate that the youth enticed by politicians to create confusion were left to face the full rigours of the law alone when they were caught.
He urged them to learn from past experiences, adding that, "taking drugs during political campaigns will not help you achieve anything better, rather it endangers your own future career".
The MP charged them to let politicians know that that the time they were given hard drugs and strong drinks to foment problems were gone forever, adding, "We want peaceful and transparent elections, in 2004 to sustain the nation's democracy".
Captain Steve Kwamena Armah (rtd), District Chief Executive, who inaugurated the Club expressed concern about poor environmental sanitation in the district and appealed to members of social clubs, societies and associations to help improve the situation.
The DCE said facilities including streetlights and improved roads would be provided to facelift the town under the Urban Five Programme. Mr Prince Elliot, President of the Club, appealed to the MP and the District Assembly to assist the Club to acquire tools for cleanup exercises to improve sanitation in the community.
Earlier members of the Club swept and cleared weeds along the road linking the Community Health Nurses Training School and the main Winneba Junction-Winneba Town road and whitewashed tress on the route.
