THE ABURIHENE, Otubuor Djan Kwasi II, has called on the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development to resolve an "impasse" between the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Nyarko Adu, and the Member of Parliament (MP), Seth Wiafe Danquah, both of the Akuapem South district.
The chief, under whose traditional jurisdiction Akuampem South falls, lamented that "the personal issue of misunderstanding between them (MP and DCE) is rather leaving a negative impact on the district."
Speaking at the grand durbar of chiefs and people of Akuapem South to climax this year's Odwira Festival at Aburi last Friday, Nana Kwasi took the initiative to broker peace between them. "I make a passionate appeal to the Hon. DCE and the MP to consider teaming up with chiefs within the district to facilitate development." Lashing out a little at them, he quipped "I do not want to believe that they undertook to serve the district in this unproductive manner."
Sources explained that the relationship between the two political leaders in the district have been growing sourer and sourer since they assumed office last year, as they keep disagreeing virtually on every conceivable issue.
Otubuor also expressed concern over the deplorable roads in the district, wondering when the government would award the Nsawam-Aburi road on contract for rehabilitation. He said that particular road had "been an issue on the dining table of residents of Akuapem."
Other roads the chief drew attention to as requiring urgent reconstruction included the St. John's-Kitase road which passes through Brekuso and the whole road network within the Aburi Botanic Gardens.
In view of the considerable sacrifice the chiefs and people of Aburi had made in donating the large acreage of land for the establishment of the gardens, the chief implored the Local Government Minister to "consider paying royalties on the gardens to enable the town boost its development projects with such proceeds."
He thanked President J. A. Kufuor for launching the Rural Development Week celebration at Kwasi Doi, a village near Nsawam in the district. Nana Kwasi hoped that the village "will be used as a model on which others will look up to."
