Ho, Sept. 16, GNA - The Volta Regional branch of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) on Friday presented a computer with its accessories to the regional Motor Transport Traffic Unit (MTTU) of the Police Service to enhance the effectiveness of the unit in enforcing traffic laws in the region.
It is also to enable a smooth take off of a networking programme of all road safety related agencies for effective co-ordinating activities. Presenting the item, Mr. Elvis Gbesemete, Regional Co-ordinator of the NRSC underscored the importance of data management to all road safety related agencies.
He expressed the hope that the presentation would help the agencies monitor road accidents in the region.
"We shall also be happy to know specific causes of accidents, type of vehicles and the category of drivers involved to enable us plan our activities properly to have value for money," he said. Receiving the item, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Bernard Dery, Regional police Commander expressed gratitude to the NRSC and promised to put the item to good use for the mutual benefit of the two agencies.
He announced that his outfit was embarking on a "democratic policing" to make the region a safe haven for natives. ACP Dery said to that end, the Regional Command was organizing capacity building for all personnel, especially Information Communication Technology (ICT) to enhance their effectiveness. He said it was also re-opening all police posts in the region with the beefing up of personnel.
ACP Dery said police operational zones would be increased with more police taskforce to prevent "violent crimes".
He observed that all the above could only be achieved by concerted effort by all and called on other benevolent organizations to assist the police and discard the notion that it is the sole responsibility of the government.
