Accra, Feb. 18, GNA - Road safety education is to be made part of the Curricula of teacher training colleges, beginning 2005 academic year, Chief Superintendent Fatima Fuseini, Education Officer of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) said on Monday.
This, she said, was to equip teachers with the necessary skills to effectively teach school children road regulations and to reduce accidents in future.
C/Supt Fuseini said this at a road safety education organized by the NRSC for students and staff of the Prince of Peace International School in Accra.
She said the programme was also to educate and instil in school children the need to be abreast with road regulations, especially schools located in accident-prone areas.
The NRSC education officer said the exercise, which started in 2001 was an on-going effort by the Commission to teach road safety education in both public and private basic schools.
She said, so far her outfit has been able to educate about 1,000 teachers in accident-prone areas nation-wide.
Mrs. Annie Vivian Antwi, Greater-Accra Regional Co-ordinator of the School Health Education Programme, said the Ghana Education Service was assisting the Police Service in the training of teachers who are already in the system so as to make the programme successful.
Mrs Antwi said after 2006, it would be mandatory for teachers in all basic schools to start teaching their students road safety regulations.
Documentaries on pedestrian crossing and reckless driving on the roads were shown to the students.
