Road traffic act not to intimidate drivers

Begoro, Sept. 5, GNA - The Begoro Branch Chairman of the GPRTU of TUC, Mr Alex Kwabena Amoama said that the new road traffic laws were to instill discipline in drivers and check road accidents but not to intimidate them.

Addressing a meeting of drivers at Begoro on Sunday to explain the road traffic act 205 to them, Mr Amoama expressed concern at the way drivers flout traffic regulations resulting in rampant road accidents and causing lost of precious lives and property. He urged drivers and transport owners to respect the new law and restore sanity in the driving profession.

Mr Amoama asked drivers to ensure that they put on their seat belt when driving and urged passengers to report drivers, who flout the new traffic law to the police.

He asked transport owners to employ competent drivers with valid driving license to drive their vehicles and warned that the union would not countenance flouting of the new law. Mr Amoama said the Union would organize regular in-service training to educate drivers on traffic regulations to ensure road accident free. He commended the government for enacting the new law to regulate drivers.

The branch first trustee Mr Kwame Amfo-Antiri said the new law was not meant for drivers alone but for the general public. He asked drivers to educate passengers not to sit at the front seat of the vehicle with their children under five years. Mr Amfo-Antiri asked drivers to stop alcoholism, speeding and over steering, especially in curves to trespass into other lanes and cause accident.

The Branch Secretary, Mr Kwame Sarpong asked drivers to maintain their vehicles regularly to enhance the life span of the vehicles and also to reduce road accidents. The Union presented a wall clock to a driver, Mr Tanko Wahabu, as the best driver for frequent maintenance of his vehicle for the past ten years. September 5, 2005
