A total of 75 boreholes are being provided for 100 communities in the Ho District at a cost of 2.6 billion cedis. Forty-seven of them have been completed and commissioned at the beneficiary communities including Tsawoenu near Ho on Saturday. The remaining 28 boreholes would soon be completed at an additional cost of 1,000 dollars each.
Mr Justice Teye-Yaw, President of the Rotary Club of Ho said at the commissioning that Rotary International, under the auspices of the Rotary Clubs of Ho and Accra-West, Canadian University Students Organisation (CUSO), in partnership with the Ho District Assembly are funding the project.
Mr Teye-Yaw said the boreholes are Rotary's contribution to improve Health and quality of water in the affected communities.
Mr Mawutor Goh, Ho District Chief Executive (DCE) said government was committed to the provision of potable water to the rural folks and called on the private sector and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to assist. He said plans were afoot to extend pipe-borne water from the Kpeve Water Head project to some deprived communities in the district.
Mr Francis Aggrey Agbotse, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ho-West, initiator of the project commended Mr Roy Andrews, a Canadian and a Rotarian of the Accra-West for his assistance in sourcing for funds. He appealed to the Water and Sanitation Committees (WSCs) of beneficiary communities to maintain and sustain the facilities to justify the heavy investment in the project.
Mr Henry Appiah, the Past President of the Rotary Club of Accra-West said 10 hand-dug wells had been provided at a cost of 25,000 dollars for the people of Abutia in the Volta Region with funds from the Rotary Club of Canada to reduce guinea worm infections in the communities.
Togbe Addae Kwasi XI, Paramount Chief of Awudome Traditional area thanked the Rotary Clubs for their gesture and pledged that the people would maintain the facility.
