Takoradi, Dec.2 -GNA-The Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Assembly (SAEMA) has embarked on a Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) Code Street Addressing Project that is expected to cost five point two billion cedis.
Mr Kwabena Darko-Mensah, Chairman of the Street Naming Committee, announced this at a meeting of stakeholders of the project at Takoradi on Saturday.
He said the assembly has awarded the project on contract to ASI ZIP Codes Company Limited.
Mr Darko-Mensah said the Anaji Electoral Area was used for pilot project for six months.
He said the assembly has decided to auction 500 to 1,000 streets in the metropolis in order to mobilise funds to finance the ZIP Code Street Addressing Project.
Mr Darko-Mensah said streets would be auctioned for not less than six million cedis.
He said persons and companies that win the bid would name and maintain the street.
Mr Darko-Mensah said prospective bidders must not have criminal record, be not less than 18 years and must should evidence of having paid basic rate for at least five years. Mr Kofi Bempah, Managing Director of ASI ZIP Codes Company Limited, said ZIP Code Street Addressing System has numerous benefits to the government, the public, local business community, foreign companies and tourists.
He said the major beneficiaries are tax collectors, utility companies and postal services agencies. Mr Bempah said the system makes it easier to locate residents and their homes by simple means.
