Accra, July 1, GNA - Residents of Sabon-Zongo Electoral Area in Accra, have been asked to embrace the Polluter Pay System, introduced by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The Assembly Member for Sabon-Zongo Electoral Area in Accra, Miss Jane Oku who made the call, said that the system would enhance waste collection and disposal to avoid diseases such as cholera and malaria. She led the residents in a clean-up to desilt choked gutters and to clear overgrown weeds in the area, as part of activities marking the Republic Day celebration.

Miss Oku said that AMA had intensified its campaign against indiscriminate disposal of waste and the Zoomlion Waste Services Company had started distributing bins free of charge to residents to improve waste management.

Mr. Jonas Amanu, Greater Accra Regional Environmental Health Officer, who took part in the clean-up, said that his outfit was strictly enforcing sanitation laws and creating public awareness on the need to keep the environment clean.

He said that people who dump waste into drains and those who connect septic tanks to public drains were being arrested and fined to serve as a deterrent to others. Mr. Amanu asked landlords to refrain from converting toilets into rooms since it was a health hazard.
