Workers of ACI Construction Limited, a company contracted to work under the suspended Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) are agitating over their six months’ salary arrears.

The company collaborated with the Ministry of Environment Science and Technology and GYEEDA Programme to employ 5000 unemployed youth who worked to fulfill their contract of cleaning the shores of the Greater Accra and Volta Regional coastline.

They also planted 15000 coconut seedlings last year, according to report. The aggrieved workers expressed frustration and revealed that the current state of affairs has made life unbearable.

Information gathered indicates that the company can’t do anything about the problem until the Ministry sanctions the release of the money due them before they can pay the aggrieved workers.

A source from the company who spoke on condition of anonymity indicated that the delay is due to the rots discovered at GYEEDA which is under investigation thereby leaving the beneficiaries of the Programme in limbo.

He said, “We were paid for the 1st. and 2nd quarters of last year which enabled us pay our workers, but the 3rd quarter was frozen due to the problems discovered with the Programme”.

“We can’t pay the workers until the ministry releases the rest of the money”, he added.

The source disclosed that the ministry has promised funds would be released by the end of January.

The company’s contract has since been suspended.
