Asikasu (E/R), Dec. 17, GNA - About five-hundred school children in the Eastern Region have been feted at the President's End of Year Party for schoolchildren at Asikasu in the New Juaben Municipality on Tuesday. The children, selected from the various first cycle institutions in the municipality interacted with government officials at the party to boost their knowledge.

According to the Regional Director of the National Commission on Children (NCC) Mr. Oduro Boateng, the President's End of Year Party had been designed to coincide with the Christmas festivities every year, to share the joy and meaning of the yuletide with the children.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Nana Adjei Boateng said the fete was to motivate the children to learn hard to become worthy citizens and advised the children to refrain from acts that could jeopardize their future.

He urged parents to be more than responsible to their children's education by providing them with the necessary logistics and be part of all extra curricular activities in the school in the interest of their children such as parent teacher association meetings (PTA) and open days where parents were required to come and complement the efforts of their children. The MCE condemned the way some children were used by their parents to over-work describing it as "child labour" and appealed to parents to make room for their children to have sound mind and atmosphere to learn to become assets to the society.

The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister Mr. Gustav Narh Dometey said the government was interested in education and was bent on providing every logistic to improve the level of education and noted that the end of year party was a means to raise the morale of the children.

He announced that plans were far advanced to bring solar lights to the schools in the town to help the children study in the evenings to improve the standard of education in the area.
