School children in road float accident

Subriso (W/R) Feb. 18, GNA-Ebenezer Adom, a staff of Wassa Amenfi East District Assembly died later and 26 others, mostly school children, sustained various degree of injuries when an articulated truck which was being used for a 93Rally round Ghana's Flag" float skidded off the road and landed in a ditch at Subriso near Wassa Akropong on Thursday. The truck, school children and their teachers were going to Bawdie for a procession on the national flag after participating in a similar event at Wassa Akropong.

The float and the procession formed part of Ghana @ 50 celebration in the district.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Wassa Akropong, Dr Frederick Yaw Sarpong, Medical Superintendent at the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital, said Adom, 29, passed away at Obuasi, while he was being transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment.

He said the body has been deposited at Dunkwa-On-Offin Government Hospital for autopsy.

Dr Sarpong said those who sustained minor injuries have been treated and discharged.

He added that seven of the injured were under intensive care and responding to treatment.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ben Wordui, the Prestea-Bogoso District Police Commander, said the driver of the truck, Richard Aidoo, 29, reported himself to the Police. DSP Wordui said the Police would investigate the cause of the accident and advise the public to be safety conscious even in times of jubilation.

Miss Doris Oduro, Wassa Amenfi East District Chief Executive described the accident as tragic and unfortunate.
