Girls Participatory Approaches to Student Success (G-PASS) under Ghana Education Service, has donated a number of gifts to 79 girls at Zanlerigu, Dagliga and Pellungu junior high schools in the Nabdam District.

The gifts include school uniforms, bags, sanitary pads, exercise books and mathematical sets. Each student received two complementary readers, a pair of sandals, pencils, pens, two school uniforms, 10 exercise books, three note books, a school bag, 14 sanitary pads, mathematical set and a ruler.

Madam Vivian Anafo, District Chief Executive, said at the ceremony that government has interest in the education of girls and would not renege in ensuring that the needed opportunities are created for learning.

She urged the girls to take their studies seriously and let no obstacle impede their progress in school since they represent the future of the district.

Madam Anafo said education is about endurance and calls for tolerance and hard work.

She indicated that as ambassadors to a scholarship scheme, the chance of other girls to benefit from the gifts in future depend on them.

Madam Anafo urged them to stay away from social vices and other self-destructive acts such as early marriages that would stunt their progress.

She expressed dissatisfaction about the dwindling performance of schools in the Basic Education Certificate Examination in the district and called on stakeholders to put in their best to improve the situation.

She also urged teachers to be role models to the girls.

Mrs Regina Pondor, District Director of Education, reiterated the interest of government to improve girls education in the country and urged parents to draw their daughters closer and show interest in the progress of their education.

Mrs Evelyn Assibi Zumakpeh, G-PASS Coordinator in the district said the scheme was designed to provide basic needs to girls from needy families in deprived areas who could be discouraged from going to school.

She said the scheme serves as encouragement for high school enrolment and retention among girls.

She said the scheme would support beneficiaries from 2015 to 2017 with measures to monitor student progress and performance.

She said funding for the scheme was made possible through UK Department for International Development in collaboration with government.

Miss Elizabeth Naahu, Zanlerigu JHS 1 student, thanked government for the support and promised to learn hard to become a role model for other students in future.
