Schools in UE to participate in Citizenship Day Celebration

School children from 300 basic schools in the Upper East Region would participate in Citizenship Day celebration on April 28, on the them: ” Every One Counts”.

The event, which is being organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), seeks to inculcate values of good citizenship into the school children.

Briefing the Media in Bolgatanga about the programme, the Regional Director of the NCCE, Mr Pontius Pilate Apaabey Baba, said the Commission decided to embark upon the exercise because sense of nationalism was key to national development.

He said: “the event which will target 4,000 schools countrywide, will nature the school children to become more responsible citizens. It would also help them to contribute significantly towards national development”.

Mr Baba said the NCCE would liaise with the Forestry Commission to encourage school children to plant trees on that day of the event to “green the country”.

He mentioned that the Commission visited community-based groups to promote the rights of marginalized, organise competition in schools about the 1992 Constitution and community durbars on the theme: ” Every One Counts”, and liaise with the security agencies to sensitize the public on the need to maintain peace and stability.

Mr Baba said: “the NCCE will also organise events to mark the international day for the protection of child rights, engage with civic education clubs and identifiable organizations on the Directive Principles of State Policy among others”.

He said that during the last quarter, the Regional Directorate of the Commission, the NCCE organised seven radio discussions on ‘Togetherness and National Advancement,’ fundamental rights and freedom and the preamble of the 1992 Constitution and functions of the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.

Mr Baba appealed to the Media to assist the Commission educate the public on activities of NCCE and the Regional Coordinating Council, Municipal and District Assemblies and non-governmental organisations to support the Commission discharge its duties effectively.
