Winneba Oct 30, GNA - Educational institutions have been urged to help create more awareness about planting.
The call was made by Captain Steve Kwamena Armah, District Chief Executive for Awutu-Effutu-Senya at a meeting with students and teachers of the University of Education Winneba Demonstration School.
It was at the instance of the national executive of the Environmental Concerned Citizens Association of Ghana (ECCAG).
Captain Armah advised the people especially school children to cultivate the spirit of tree planting and nurturing them to grow. He charged chiefs and opinion leaders to initiate measures to curb indiscriminate bush burning and the illegal felling of trees, saying, the act is inimical to the growth and development of the country's forest reserves.
Mr Joseph Yaw Aidoo, National President of ECCAG, called for the strict enforcement of laws on the protection of the forest to deter people from depleting the nation's the country's ecology. He blamed the nation's socio-economic woes on the lack of political will to enforce laws and regulations, adding that, "unless laws are made to work as expected we will remain in our predicament for good". Mr. Aidoo called on heads of institutions to encourage the formation environmental awareness clubs to whip up the interest of the people.
