Regional and District Committees are to be formed to direct and mobilise resources for science and technology education.

Mr. Samuel Alberto Tekyi, Wassa Amenfi District Chief Executive (DCE), announced this at the closing of a Science, Technology and Mathematics Education Clinic for the Youth at Asankrangwa, in the Western Region.

He said the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports had endorsed the committees, adding that, Science Resource Centres had been established throughout the country to promote the teaching and learning of science at the pre-tertiary level.

The DCE asked the youth to protect themselves from the dreaded HIV/AIDS by avoiding casual sex and urged them to concentrate on their studies since abstinence was the best means of protection.

Mr. John Simon Ocran, District Director of Education, said boys participated in the clinic, which had been the preserve of girls.

He said the clinics were instituted to enhance the knowledge of pupils in science, technology and mathematics as one of the pillars of the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) Programme.

Mr. Ocran noted that few women had made it in the sciences, saying, "given the opportunity, the girl-child can contribute significantly to the development of the country through the sciences".

He urged the pupils to take science seriously because it was the only way the country could advance.
