Science tutors told to be innovative

Nkoranza, Feb 11 GNA - Nana Osei Tutu, a chemistry tutor at Berekum Secondary School, has urged science teachers to be innovative in teaching and to use their knowledge to help improve the living standards of the people.

He said the teachers could use science to help the people to distil alcohol from fermented cocoa or mango as another source of income. The tutor was addressing a one day workshop organised by the Nkoranza District Directorate of Education to help about 40 junior secondary school science teachers in the district to update their knowledge.

Mr Nkum Nyarko, President of the Brong Ahafo branch of Ghana Association of Science Teachers, urged science teachers to take their students on excursions to scientific centres in order to sustain their interest in the subject.

Mr Lawrence Briamah Ntiamoah, Nkoranza District Science Technology and Mathematics Education Coordinator complained that the main challenges facing science teaching in the district were the lack of science textbooks, trained science teachers and a District Science Resource Centre.
