Sekondi MP appeals to parents to invest in children's education

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sekondi, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, has appealed to parents to invest in the education of their children, to enable them to acquire skills and knowledge needed for national development.

He noted that human resource development was crucial to ensuring sustained economic gains.

Papa Owusu-Ankomah gave the advice at the Second Best Teacher Awards Ceremony in Sekondi on Friday, to reward 22 hard working teachers, and students, who had excelled in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The event that coincided with World Teachers’ Day was instituted by the MP last year, to promote quality education delivery in the constituency, and to boost the performance of BECE candidates.

The award winners received home appliances, motorbikes and certificates.

Papa Owusu-Ankomah gave financial support of GH¢15, 000 to 85 students in second cycle institutions in the constituency under the Education Support Scheme, which he instituted three years ago.

Ms. Sophia Ewusie-Wilson of Sekondi Wesley Methodist School was adjudged the best head teacher in the Primary School category, and Mr. Charles Kumordzie of Sekondi Old Hospital Junior High School (JHS), was the best teacher in the JHS category.

The rest were Ms. Lina Yalley of Sekondi Presby, the best teacher in the Primary School category while Ms. Susana Afful was adjudged the best teacher in the Kindergarten category.

The chairman of the Sekondi Teacher Awards Committee, Nana Kwamina lewis, asked teachers and students, who did win any award, to work diligently in order to merit an award next year.
