The Department of Urban Roads in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis has commenced road maintenance works in the Metropolis to help reduce heavy traffic, accidents as well as make it more convenient for road users.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Michael Dzisi, the Metro Director of Urban Roads, said his outfit decided to take up the maintenance of the major town roads to ensure smooth vehicular movement in the metropolis.
He said the work would for now mainly involve the patching of potholes.
The Director expressed concern about the state of some roads in the city and attributed the situation to heavy-duty trucks that use the roads which cause them to develop cracks and expand gradually into potholes thereby making it unsafe for road users.
The Regional Director noted with concern that his outfit was not able to embark on regular road maintenance due to inadequate funds allocated to the department.
He said if the department is given the needed funds they would ensure that all the city roads are in good shape to accommodate the number of vehicles that ply on them.
Mr Daisi appealed to the government to allocate the department with the needed funds to enable it execute its mandate.
