Essipong, (W/R) Dec. 27, GNA - Works on the external portions of the Essipong stadium near Sekondi has reached an advanced stage and would be in readiness come January next year.

The works, which are about 90 per cent complete, covers the parking lots, main roads, turnstile buildings, perimeter roads, fence wall, grassing, pedestrian walkways, main gates and the installation of security cameras.
Mr. Ato Badu-Prah, Resident Engineer of the stadium who briefed the GNA Sports during an inspection of the on-going works at the site on Wednesday, said that even though the external works were "a little" behind schedule, everything was being done to make the facility ready for use in January next year. He said it was likely that certain external works including the grassing of margins of the main road would be undertaken while the tournament was on.
He said the main Sekondi-Inchaban road that links the stadium was 80 per cent complete while the changing rooms and car parks were 85 per cent complete.
The GNA Sports saw workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) busily laying underground cables while others were putting finishing touches to the dressing rooms and other facilities attached to the training pitches and also tiding-up of access roads and surroundings of the 20,000 capacity stadium.
Mr Badu-Prah said the training pitches are now 95 percent complete whilst maintenance of the grass, removal of weeds and the laying of new pipes to sprinkle water were underway.
He said the delay of the award of contract for the external works, coupled with heavy rainfall hampered the works, adding that the parking lot, which was water logged, had to be excavated and refilled before the surface dressing and other works could be carried out. The streetlights for the parking lots have been installed while Ghana Telecom was also mounting its mast to make telephone facilities available for the tournament.
Several people were spotted removing grass, weeding the Fijai, Railway and Essipong and Gyandu training pitches in preparation towards the tournament.
Some food vendors and alcoholic beverage retailers have taken several portions of the main roads leading to the stadium, all in anticipation of the brisk business during the tournament.
