The government has voted seven billion cedis to reconstruct the 10.2-kilometre Namong-Amoawi-Barekese road, Mr Kwabena Sarfo, Member of Parliament (MP) for Offinso South, has announced.
He said the road, which would be tarred, had already been awarded on contract and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
Mr Sarfo was addressing an Easter rally held at Amoawi in the Offinso District to discuss and map out strategies to speed up the development of the community.
It was organised under the auspices of the Amoawi-Adiembra-Ampabame 'Onuado Kuo', a development-oriented society formed by citizens in three Offinso communities resident in Kumasi and Accra.
The MP noted that the successful completion of the project would provide huge relief and tremendous impetus to the economic activities of people in the towns and villages served by the road.
Mr Sarfo advised the people to take advantage of the attractive producer price of cocoa to maintain and rehabilitate all abandoned cocoa farms to boost the economy of the area.
He pointed out that "it is simply unthinkable to expect the government to put money into the private pockets of individuals, what it could do is to create the necessary conditions which you would have to take advantage of, to better your situation".
He also drew attention to the need for parents to send their children to school, saying, "With the size of farmlands shrinking each passing day owing to population pressures, education remains the most viable investment option".
The MP praised Dr Owusu Akyaw Duah, a lecturer at the Ghana Medical School, through whose initiative, a community clinic has now been established at Amoawi.
Mr J.Y. Oduro, Offinso District Chief Executive, said he was impressed by the self-help spirit of the people and gave the assurance that the district assembly would give the needed support to their development efforts.
Dr Joseph Oduro, the District Director of Health Services, advised the people to patronise the clinic to help ease congestion at the Saint Patrick's Hospital.
He also asked them to ensure high environmental sanitation and observe personal hygiene to prevent disease attacks, noting that, most diseases could be prevented through sound environmental sanitation practices.
Dr Duah earlier spoke of plans to improve facilities at the clinic and provide accommodation for the staff working there.
An appeal for funds to expand facilities at the clinic so as to widen its scope of services yielded 5.8 million cedis.
