Seventeen farmers honoured in Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma

Bebu (Ash), Nov 5, GNA - Seventeen farmers were on Friday honoured at the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District celebration of the 20th Farmers' Day at Bebu.

Mr Clifford Boateng, a 47-year-old farmer from Kuntanase, who was adjudged the overall best farmer, received a bicycle, a 20-inch television set, four cutlasses, a pair of Wellington boots and a certificate.

The theme for the celebration was "Food Safety and Improved Nutrition for a Healthy and Active Nation".

Mr Bright Addai-Mununkum, the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Chief Executive, commended Ghanaian farmers for their contributions to the socio-economic development of Ghana.

He said the mass cocoa spraying exercise and the application of the high technology had resulted in the increase in cocoa production in the country.

Mr Addai-Mununkum warned farmers against spraying their crops with chemicals, which could pose health hazard to them.

He advised farmers to diversify agriculture production to enable so that they could earn sustainable incomes to enable them to improve their standards of living.

Mr Addai-Mununkum said the government was determined to rehabilitate roads in the district to facilitate economic activities. Mr Gbamara Dery, District Director of Food and Agriculture, commended the Bosomtwe and Atwima rural Banks and the assembly for donating towards the celebration of the Farmers' Day.

He urged farmers to seek advice on modern agriculture practices from agricultural extension officers to enable them increase food production.

Nana Boakye Yiadom, chief of Bebu, said advised the youth to go into agriculture because it is a lucrative venture.
