Nalerigu, (N/R), May 20, GNA - A severe rain-storm has hit the East Mamprusi District and its environs causing havoc to property worth several thousands of Ghana cedis and also rendering more than 300 people homeless. Property destroyed included the newly built Nalerigu market complex, which is yet to be occupied, a warehouse belonging to the former DCE of the area, as well as private and state structures. In Sakogu, a nearby community, 60 private houses were destroyed and displaced about 100 people, a school block built by the European Union and a church were badly affected.

However, there was no record of any lost of lives during the storm, except one recorded case of injury at Sakogu. The rain-storm occurred in the afternoon when many residents had left for home for their farms.

Last year's rains brought in its wake floods that swept away several acres of farm lands in the Mamprugu area. Personnel of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the district has assessed the situation and had assured that relief items would soon be brought in to help the plight of the affected. 20 May 09
