Severe rainstorm hits 10 communities in Ahafo Ano North

Tepa (Ash), Feb. 24, GNA - A severe rainstorm on Saturday hit 10 communities in the Ahafo Ano North District, damaging 53 houses and four public buildings.

The storm also rendered 575 people homeless and properties worth 225 million cedis were destroyed in the process.

The affected communities were Dwaaho, Manfo, Asuhyiae, Mfanibu, Achina, Nkubem, Akwasiase, Jacobu, Nyamenaye and Anyinasuso. At Dwaaho, a three-classroom JSS block collapsed, the roof of a community library, the block of the Methodist Primary School's Kinder Garten (K-G), the Asuhyiae SDA church roof ripped off. The JSS pupils at Dwaaho have moved into a newly completed HPIC funded 3-classroom block, while most of the people who were affected are staying with friends and relatives.

Mr Akwasi Adu Poku, acting District Chief Executive (DCE) together with Nana Kodua Atakora, the district NADMO Co-ordinator have visited the affected communities to sympathise with them and to inspect the extent of damage caused to properties.

Mr Adu Poku stated that, rainstorm was increasingly becoming one of the major causes of disasters in the country and appealed to the people to discourage illegal chainsaw operation and logging and to take the planting of trees in the communities as a wind break. Nana Atakora, advised the people to rehabilitate their old houses and not to wait until such houses collapsed.

He assured the people of possible assistance from the appropriate quarters and urged those who could afford to rehabilitate their damaged building to do so.
