Shama, July 20, GNA - The Shama District Assembly has commissioned a GH¢135,000 market complex and a car station at Shama Junction to boost the economic livelihood of the indigenes.

The market complex constructed by the Works Department of the Assembly, has storage facilities, offices, sanitary facilities and a field designated for offloading goods and commodities.

Mr Enoch Kojo Appiah, District Chief Executive of Shama in the Western Region commissioning the facility on Wednesday said the project was to ensure that traders and market women in general did not transact business along the major road linking the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis and the Greater Accra Region.

He said, “thank God the road crashes due to economic activities along the road has now reduced". He, therefore, called on the traders to occupy the market complex as a matter of urgency to avoid hawking, which normally tarnished the beauty of the town.

Mr Appiah called on the market women to make good use of the facility and ensure environmental cleanliness to avert the outbreak of airborne diseases.

The DCE noted that recalcitrant drivers and traders, who fail to comply with orders and sell or load and offload outside the main market complex, would not be spared when caught.

Ms Emelia Arthur, Deputy Minister, Western Region, said the Better Ghana agenda of the NDC Government was to ensure holistic development of the citizenry.

She said women were core in the development of every nation and that government was committed in raising their standard of living to enable them to play active role in society.

Ms Arthur said the Beposo market also in the district was being given a facelift while Inchaban would be provided with new market.

Nana Brafo Dadzie II, Chief of Shama Junction, who recounted the history of the market from the 1980s, touched on the struggle the Assembly and surrounding communities had faced in putting up the structure.

He, therefore, lauded the contributions of all individuals who galvanized for its construction and successful completion.
