Sixteen million dollars to be spent on water project-Kufuor

Kumawu (Ash), Nov 1, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Monday announced that the government would spend 16 million US dollars on the provision of potable water for the people of Kumawu in the Sekyere East district, to solve the acute water problem in the area The President who was addressing a durbar of chiefs and people organised in his honour on at Kumawu on the last leg of his six-day working visit to the Ashanti Region, said feasibility studies on the project had already been completed, He said treated water would be pumped from the Afram River to the people on completion of the project.

President Kufuor told the people that government had planned to upgrade the Kumawu Health Centre into a hospital to improve health delivery in the area.

Responding to an appeal by the Omanhene of Kumawu, Barimah Asumadu Sakyi II for the creation of a separate district for the area, the President said serious consideration would be given to the request. The President said he would work within the confines of the law to create new districts where necessary and reminded the Ghanaians that the population of an area that would request for district status should not be less than 75,000.

President Kufuor called on the people to vote massively for the NPP to retain the Party in power saying, the Government had kept faith with the people and deserved to be given another mandate.

He said: "our achievements within our first term in office is there for all to see and this cannot be wished away by our political opponents".

Barimah Asumadu Sakyi said the people were grateful to the Kufuor administration for providing them with a fair share of national development, which according to him included the upgrading of the Tweneboa Kodua Secondary School and the rehabilitation of the Kumawu-Drobonso road to facilitate economic activities.

President Kufuor was accompanied by some Ministers of State including Dr Richard Anane, Minister of Roads and Transport, Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, Minister of Regional Integration and NEPAD, Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports and Mr S.K. Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister, who addressed separate durbars at Oforikrom in Kumasi, Juaben and Effiduase.
