Excessive use of social media among students and pupils has accounted for the poor academic performance of these students in examinations, Kwesi Nimo, headteacher of the Apostolic Jubilee Junior High School, Ashtown, Kumasi, has observed.
He explained that students were fond of writing in shorthand and also spelling words wrongly on social media, a situation that had contributed to the poor grammar they lay bare in writing.
In order to end this disturbing phenomenon, Mr. Nimo has cautioned students across the country to minimise their use of social media and pay much attention to their studies. This, he said, if they do, will ensure they excel in their studies.
He made this known in an interview with ClassFMonline.com Thursday, June 16 in relation to the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Mr. Nimo also urged stakeholders including Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs), the clergy, and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to be up and doing to ensure that students are able to perform well in their studies.
Touching on examination malpractices, he said there was the need for an effective collaboration between the GES and the security agencies in the country to curb the menace.
