Some 3,150 illiterate adults learn to read and write in Atwima

Some 3,150 illiterate adults in the Atwima District have enrolled for the Phase Two of the functional literacy programme of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education.

Mr John M. Oduro, District Programme Officer of the NFED, said they would be taught not only the skills of reading and writing but would also be assisted to go into income-generating activities.

He was speaking at a day's orientation workshop organised for 105 facilitators who would handle the programme.

Mr Oduro said the facilitators had been supplied with primers, exercise books and other teaching and learning aids.

He said the Phase Two of the programme would last for 18 months and would help to broaden the general outlook of the adult learners.

He told the facilitators to approach their work with commitment and dedication to enable the objectives of the programme to be achieved.

Under the first phase about 1,450 illiterate adults in the district were assisted to acquire reading and writing skills.
