Spintex Road street lights… what’s up?

Many a motorist and indeed residents of the Spintex road residential & business enclave applauded when work started on the erection of street lights on the long stretch of road.

But the applause has since deafened because while the aluminum poles have been erected, no light has shown on the streets since. The poles have been in place for a while now but so far are more of decorative pieces just like the badly lined up ones on the motorway.

A few along the Coca-cola roundabout to Sakumono junction stretch is however working, aiding motorists greatly with night driving and of great assistance to pedestrians.

With the expectation of many that the darkness along the Road will be over soon dashed, users of the road have been left with continuing to use lights provided by moving, security lights from a few companies and billboards to get their way clear.

It is a dangerous road to use at night, and even more dangerous without lights. Efforts to get some responses from identified agencies have so far failed, but possible excuses of conserving energy in the wake of the current crisis seems far-fetched.

This is because many other streets are on with even the empty seats at the Independence Square enjoying uninterrupted power supply and protective lights.

With an increasing population of residents and influx of businesses, usage of the Spintex Road has increased with many workers exposed to all kinds of danger as they stand in the dark looking for vehicles to their homes at night.

Interestingly, many of the communities in the area including some of the much-talked about estates do not have street lights, making general movement in these areas unsafe at night. Apart from a few of the neighborhoods including Manet, Coastal and Regimanuel (even there, a number of streets are very dark because there are no street lights), many of the other neighborhoods like Kotobabi, Baatsoona as well as Dove hill, Akuaba, Hydrafom and Frimpomaa do not have street lights. In some of these neighbourhoods, the security lights from some houses spreads unto the streets.

As of now, it is not immediately known when the poles erected on the Spintex Road and indeed the Motorway will be lighted.
