Kumasi, Oct 16, GNA - Mr Mathew Appiah, General Manager of the Saint Paul's Co-operative Credit Union at Amakom in Kumasi, has called on the society to support the operations of credit unions to play a role in alleviating poverty in communities.

He said apart from helping members to save money to start or support their businesses, credit unions also train members on good business management practices that had been identified as the major cause of business failures in the country.

Mr Appiah said this when opening a branch of the Union at Kentinkrono, a suburb of Kumasi at the weekend.

He appealed to the people in the community to develop positive attitude towards savings instead of spending their money on funerals and other extravagant lifestyles that could affect their future. Mr Fofie Agyeman, Board chairman of the Union, said another branch would soon be opened at Appiadu and other parts of the metropolis. Nana Owusu Afriyie, Chief of Kentinkrono, who chaired the function, commended the union for establishing its first branch in the community and said the branch would help improve the living conditions of the people.
